Airsoft for me has been an evolution of sorts. I started out using nothing but standard mags for the realism, converted in the middle years to nothing but high caps because the fields I played at allowed box mags on m4’s and without hi caps I wasn’t competitive, and have now finally settled into my “Golden years” where high caps are only a reserve in case the game gets really out of hand, or really long. Over the years I have owned only M based guns, and only classic army guns and have significant of experience with the various metal magazines for this weapons system- none of which I might add have stood out as clear leaders, and none of which are particularly bad solutions.
Flak several months ago started raving about the magpul line for airsoft and went out and purchased some of their pmags. After the first game he use the mags he raved about these things and insisted I buy at least one of them. Now, flak raves about a lot of stuff, and most of the time he’s got it right.
He nailed this one on the head.
To keep it simple I’ll categorize the mag by this is, this is not.
-This is not a magazine you want to buy for spray and pray although I think it could probably hold its own given it has 120 rounds when fully loaded, and not winding the mag is rad.
- This is a magazine you want to buy if you prefer to pick your shots, fire in semi auto and occasionally fire in full auto bursts to cover team mates as the move.
- This is the mag Jack Bauer would use if he played the game.
- This is not a mag you buy if you are not a serious airsofter as there are cheaper solutions that offer the same “performance” by way our rounds stored.
- This is a magazine you “invest in” and will likely serve you for as long as you play the game.
- This is a beefy magazine that is "indestructable"
- This magazine takes no prisoners
- This is an easy magazine to quickly grip, load and unload.
- This is not a magazine you want to lose on the field.
If there is a perfect ammunition solution for the more advanced airsofter today I think this is it. The pmag offers the player some of the advantages of a “high cap” without going hundreds of rounds overboard and having to do ANY winding. Why are some of the advantages important? It has everyting to do with the fields you play on.
What I mean by this is- I play airsoft as milsim, but not everyone I play against plays it as this. This magazine gives you enough ammo at 120 rounds to play confidently in an environment where players are using a mix of high cap and standard mags, and a mix of spray and pray and targeted shooting. I fully intend on phasing out all of my metal mags with pmags over the next year and then never buying another magazine for this weapons system again. Sometimes you find things that work well, in this case this works well and regardless of price is a great product.
